Great Mosque of Djenné
Mosque Largest mud-brick mosque, iconic Sudano-Sahelian architecture
Djenné’s Great Mosque is the world’s largest mudbrick structure, an exemplar of Sudano-Sahelian architecture; visitors see its annual communal replastering, the Friday prayers and the surrounding market.
The Great Mosque of Djenné is a large adobe (mud-brick) mosque in the town of Djenné, Mopti Region, Mali, and is widely regarded as the largest mud-built structure in the world. The present building dates from 1907 and is a central landmark of the town.
The mosque is notable for its monumental facade with rows of engaged buttresses and pinnacles topped by ostrich eggs, and for its scale as a community-built earthen structure. It dominates the town’s central market square and is the focal point of the annual Crepissage - a communal replastering of the building that involves hundreds of residents.
The current mosque was rebuilt in 1907 under the direction of local master-builder Ismaila Traoré on the site of earlier mosques that dated back centuries. It has been maintained through continuous community-led repairs and restorations since that reconstruction.
The mosque sits on a raised platform in the historic town of Djenné, which is located on an island in the floodplain of the Bani River in central Mali. Djenné is about 150 km by road from Mopti and lies within a flat, seasonal floodplain landscape.
- Crepissage festival: Annual communal replastering festival called the Crepissage takes place in March and is the best time to see traditional adobe maintenance techniques.
- Current building date: The current mosque building was reconstructed in 1907 using local earthen architecture techniques and is maintained with regular community work.
