Great Glen
Valley Scotland's long glen, major geological fault line
The Great Glen in Scotland follows a long geological fault from Fort William to Inverness. The Caledonian Canal, Loch Ness and hill trails offer boating, walking and Highland scenery.
The Great Glen is a long geological valley in the Highlands of Scotland running roughly northeast to southwest and aligned with the Great Glen Fault. It is a major landscape feature containing several lochs and a historic transport corridor.
The valley formed along a major fault line and has been used for travel and settlement since prehistoric times; in more recent centuries it hosted engineering works such as the Caledonian Canal and infrastructure linking the Highlands.
Stretching between the city of Inverness on the northeast and Fort William on the southwest, the Great Glen bisects the Scottish Highlands and is traversed by road and rail routes connecting these regional centres.
- Length and accessibility: The glen follows the Great Glen Fault and provides linear travel routes for roads, rail and the canal; it offers multiple viewpoints and forested and mountainous scenery along roughly 100 kilometres of landscape.
What to See #
- Loch Ness: Loch Ness, the largest and most famous of the lochs along the glen, running more than 30 kilometres within the valley and forming the most prominent water body.
- Caledonian Canal: The Caledonian Canal which follows parts of the glen and links a series of lochs to provide a navigable inland waterway across the Great Glen.
- Inverness and Fort William: Major towns at or near the glen's ends, notably Inverness at the northeast and Fort William at the southwest, which serve as common access points for visitors.
How to Get to Great Glen #
The A82 runs along the glen from Inverness to Fort William; the corridor is also served by regular bus services. Inverness has rail connections to central Scotland; driving is the most flexible way to explore the glen.
Tips for Visiting Great Glen #
- Drive the A82 along Loch Ness for the classic scenic route and pull into laybys for photos and short hikes.
- Try early morning canoeing or kayaking on calmer days for wildlife and solitude.
- Avoid summer weekends on the main viewpoints to reduce time spent in coach traffic.
