Main image

Great Falls is a series of waterfalls and steep cascades on the Potomac River located where the river cuts through Mather Gorge at the border between Maryland and Virginia, roughly northwest of Washington, D.C. The river descends in multiple cascades and rapids as it negotiates the bedrock constriction.

The site offers multiple paved overlooks and short trails operated by the National Park Service on the Virginia side and connecting trails on the Maryland side, giving clear views of the falls and the gorge. Hikes include riverside routes-most notably the Billy Goat Trail on the Maryland shore-and several easy walking paths with interpretive signs.

Recreation at and below the falls is concentrated and sometimes technical: rock climbing and whitewater boating occur but are confined to experienced users; the river includes class V whitewater through the gorge. Photographic viewpoints and picnic areas are the primary visitor facilities.

European-American improvements in the late 18th and early 19th centuries included early canal works in the vicinity, notably the Patowmack Canal initiative associated with George Washington, intended to bypass the falls for navigation. The land around the falls was later protected and parts now form Great Falls Park and sections of the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park.

Great Falls sits about 15 miles (roughly 24 kilometers) northwest of downtown Washington, D.C., straddling the Potomac at the Maryland-Virginia line. The nearest towns with visitor services are the Virginia suburbs immediately downstream and the Maryland communities along the canal towpath.

  • Best time to visit: Spring and early summer generally bring higher river flows and more dramatic cascades; late summer and early fall are lower and calmer for viewing.
  • Safety and access: Official viewpoints are fenced and intended for safe observation; the river and rocks are hazardous and whitewater navigation is restricted to experienced paddlers.

What to See #

  • Great Falls Park (Virginia side): Managed by the U.S. National Park Service on the Virginia side, offering paved overlooks, short trails and parking close to the river. The park provides the most accessible viewing points for the cascades and the adjoining gorge.
  • C&O Canal National Historical Park (Maryland side): The towpath and trail systems of the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park run along the Maryland shore and connect to the Billy Goat Trail, a steeper riverside route favored by hikers.
  • Mather Gorge: The stretch of river immediately below the falls is known as Mather Gorge, a steep rocky channel carved by the Potomac where whitewater conditions concentrate and rock-climbing and technical boating occur.
