Great Falls Park
Park Park featuring Potomac River waterfalls and trails
On the Potomac near McLean, Great Falls Park showcases water tumbling through Mather Gorge; visitors hike cliffside trails, photograph cascades from overlooks, and watch expert kayakers tackle whitewater.
Great Falls Park is a National Park Service site in Fairfax County, Virginia, protecting a stretch of the Potomac River where the water drops into Mather Gorge. The river descends roughly 76 feet over a series of cascades across a short distance at the falls.
The park offers multiple overlooks on the south bank that provide close views of the cascades and rapids, several hiking trails along Mather Gorge, and a visitor centre with interpretive exhibits. The site includes the remains of the Patowmack Canal, an 18th-century river-improvement project associated with George Washington.
The Patowmack Canal project was begun in the late 18th century by the Potomac Company and its stonework and cuts are visible within the park today. The river corridor has long been used for navigation improvements and now for recreation; the National Park Service manages the site and its facilities.
Located in northern Virginia on the south bank of the Potomac River, the park is about 15 miles northwest of downtown Washington, D.C., and is accessed from the George Washington Memorial Parkway.
- Best viewpoints: the main overlooks on the south bank and the Olmsted Island footbridge give the closest and most panoramic views of the falls.
- Access & timing: parking and trail access are limited on busy summer weekends; visiting early in the morning or on weekdays reduces crowds.
What to See #
- Visitor Center: a small National Park Service visitor centre with orientation exhibits, maps and information about the river geology and canal history.
- Main overlooks: a series of paved and unpaved overlooks on the Virginia side that provide the closest panoramic views of the cascades and rapids along Mather Gorge.
- Olmsted Island: an island in the river accessible by footbridge with trails and viewpoints that look into the gorge and rapids.
- Patowmack Canal ruins: stone canal cuts, masonry and towpath remains from the late 18th-century Patowmack Canal, an early navigation improvement associated with George Washington's Potomac Company.

From Washington, D.C.: take the George Washington Memorial Parkway north to the park’s main entrance at Old Dominion Drive (about 15-25 minutes from downtown D.C., traffic dependent). The park has a paid entrance fee and limited parking; use public transit to nearby Tysons Corner and taxi or rideshare for the final leg if preferred.
