Great Bernera (Beàrnaraigh Mòr) is a small island off the west coast of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland, with a long history of crofting settlement and maritime activity. It is connected to Lewis by a road bridge completed in the mid-20th century and forms part of the parish and community of west Lewis.
The island is noted for its sheltered white-sand bays, machair (coastal grassland) and traditional crofting landscapes; visitors come for coastal walks, beaches and birdlife rather than built monuments. There are scattered settlements and small piers, with low-lying terrain and views across to the Lewis coastline.
Historically the island has been occupied by Gaelic-speaking crofting communities and was shaped by 19th- and 20th-century patterns of agriculture and fishing. The mid-20th-century bridge changed transport and access by connecting the island directly to Lewis.
Great Bernera lies off the west coast of the Isle of Lewis, adjacent to the Carloway area; the nearest town on Lewis is Stornoway, the island group’s main town, on the east side of Lewis across the island.
- Bridge view: The road bridge built in the mid-20th century links the island to the main island of Lewis and is a common photographic vantage for views of the shoreline and machair.
- When to go: Sheltered sandy beaches and grazed machair support seabirds and wildflowers; spring and early summer are best for flowering displays and birdwatching.
