Gravensteen is a medieval castle in the centre of Ghent, Belgium, notable for its compact keep, ramparts and moat. Constructed around 1180 by Count Philip of Alsace, it functioned as a fortified residence and seat of feudal authority.
The site contains a central keep, curtain walls and a courtyard; interior displays include medieval weaponry, armour and exhibits on castle life. Visitors can climb battlements and ramps for views over the old city and the nearby Lys river.
Over the centuries the building was repurposed as a courthouse, prison and even an industrial site before a late 19th-century restoration returned it to a reconstructed medieval appearance. Today it is an accessible museum and one of Ghent’s principal historic monuments.
Gravensteen sits within Ghents historic core, close to the Graslei and the citys medieval harbour area.
