Stream Historic riverside quay in Ghent with medieval guildhouses
Ghent’s Graslei waterfront lines the Leie with medieval guild houses and cafés; tourists come to canal boat rides, daytime photography, and evening terraces.
Graslei is a historic quay on the north bank of the River Leie in the centre of Ghent, Belgium, known for its long row of former guild houses. It forms one side of a highly photographed riverside ensemble opposite the Korenlei.
The site comprises tightly packed historic facades that date from medieval and later periods and now house cafés and restaurants along the water. The riverside setting is a common gathering place and a frequent stop on city sightseeing routes.
Graslei developed as Ghent’s medieval port and commercial quay, where guilds and merchants established premises along the river. The facades seen today reflect centuries of construction and modification, representing the city’s commercial heritage.
