Monument Mausoleum of Ulysses S. Grant on Hudson River
Along Manhattan’s Riverside Drive, Grant’s Tomb (the General Grant National Memorial) houses the sarcophagi of Ulysses S. Grant and Julia Grant in a neoclassical mausoleum with views over the Hudson.
Grant’s Tomb, formally the General Grant National Memorial, is the mausoleum containing the remains of Ulysses S. Grant and his wife Julia, located in Manhattan, New York City. The monument was completed in the late 19th century and is administered as a national memorial.
The structure features a domed rotunda, commemorative sculpture and an interior crypt where the sarcophagi lie. The memorial was conceived as a civic monument honoring the Civil War general and U.S. president and includes inscriptions and sculptural work celebrating his life.
Designed by architect John H. Duncan, construction took place in the 1890s and the monument opened to the public at the end of that decade. It remains a focal civic memorial in northern Manhattan.
The memorial sits on Riverside Drive near 122nd Street in upper Manhattan, overlooking the Hudson River and adjacent to Riverside Park.
- Interior: Administered by the National Park Service, the memorial contains the sarcophagi of Ulysses S. Grant and his wife, Julia, located within the interior crypt.
