The Grande Arche is a monumental modern cube located in the La Défense business district west of Paris, completed in 1989. Designed as a contemporary counterpart to the Arc de Triomphe, it forms a major terminus on Paris’s Axe historique and houses offices, exhibition spaces and a rooftop viewpoint.
Visitors can access elevated terraces that offer framed views along the historic axis toward central Paris. The Arche’s cubic geometry and large central void make it an easily recognisable modern landmark in the La Défense skyline.
Designed by Danish architect Johan Otto von Spreckelsen with construction completed in the late 1980s, the Grande Arche was inaugurated in 1989 as part of national commemorations and urban redevelopment of the business district. It has since functioned as both an office complex and occasional exhibition venue.
The structure sits on the Île-de-France side of Paris in the La Défense esplanade, to the west of the city centre across the Seine.

How to Get to Grande Arche #
From central Paris, take Metro Line 1 to La Défense-Grande Arche (end of the line) or RER A to La Défense. The Esplanade is a short walk from the station; follow the pedestrian signage across the plaza to the arch. If driving, access via Boulevard Circulaire and park in underground lots beneath La Défense.
Tips for Visiting Grande Arche #
- Enter La Défense from the CNIT/Esplanade side and walk east along the axis toward the Arc de Triomphe for the classic framed view.
- Avoid weekday commute hours; the business district empties out after 7pm and early Sunday mornings for quieter photos.
- Climb the rooftop viewpoint when open - weather permitting - for a symmetrical view down the Avenue de la Grande Armée to the Arc de Triomphe.
Best Time to Visit Grande Arche #
Best visited outside weekday peak office hours to appreciate the monument as architecture rather than as part of a business commute.
