Grand Turk Island

Grand Turk Island is the main and most visited island of the Turks and Caicos Islands, a British Overseas Territory in the Atlantic/Caribbean region. It contains Cockburn Town, the administrative capital, and is a long-standing centre for diving, fishing and maritime history.

The island’s economy is strongly linked to tourism and cruise visits; visitors commonly go ashore to explore beaches, dive sites on nearby coral reefs and the small historic centre around Cockburn Town. The national museum and lighthouse are among the island’s principal cultural landmarks.

Historically the island was important for salt production and maritime trade; today it functions as the territory’s political and tourism hub. The island’s infrastructure is concentrated around its main settlement and harbour facilities.

Grand Turk is a relatively small, low-lying island in the Turks and Caicos archipelago; Cockburn Town sits on the sheltered side of the island close to the main anchorage and ferry/cruise berths. The island is accessed by air and sea from Providenciales and international connections.
