Grand Trianon
Palace Palace retreat within Versailles estate with marble architecture
Within the Versailles park, the Grand Trianon is a pink marble retreat built for Louis XIV; visitors tour its formal gardens, colonnaded galleries and intimate royal apartments.
The Grand Trianon is a 17th-century palace on the grounds of the Palace of Versailles, created as an intimate royal retreat for Louis XIV. The building is noted for its low profile, colonnaded façades and use of marble.
The palace contains suites of reception rooms and private apartments arranged around colonnades and small courtyards, and is set immediately adjacent to formal terraces and gardens. It was intended as a comfortable, less formal alternative to the main palace and was used by successive monarchs.
Designed and built in the late 1680s by Jules Hardouin-Mansart, the Grand Trianon has retained much of its late 17th-century layout and decorative approach, with later restoration work to preserve interiors. It has served various ceremonial and residential roles within the Versailles estate since its completion.
The Grand Trianon lies inside the Versailles estate in the town of Versailles, just outside Paris, and is typically visited on day trips from the city; it sits within the wider parkland and palace complex southwest of central Paris.
- Date and architect: Built in the late 17th century as a retreat for Louis XIV and designed by the architect Jules Hardouin-Mansart.
What to See #
- Main palace: A single-storey palace built with a long colonnaded arcade and pink marble columns, designed as a private retreat from the main royal residence.
- Gardens: Formal terraces and gardens directly adjoining the palace are arranged in a geometric layout and link the building to the wider park of the Versailles estate.
How to Get to Grand Trianon #
From central Paris take the RER C toward Versailles and alight at Versailles Château-Rive Gauche station. From that station walk through the Palace grounds across the Parterre and gardens to the Grand Trianon - expect a 15-25 minute walk inside the estate from the Château.
By public road you can reach Versailles from Paris via the A13 motorway (about 20 km west of central Paris); there are also SNCF mainline trains to Versailles-Chantiers and local bus 171 (Pont de Sèvres-Versailles) that stop near the palace complex.
Tips for Visiting Grand Trianon #
- Visit the Grand Trianon later in the afternoon after the main Château de Versailles rush has subsided-this quieter time makes the colonnaded terraces and private apartments easier to enjoy.
- Approach the Grand Trianon on foot through the palace gardens (the paths between the Palace and the Trianons) rather than trying to enter separately by car; the garden approach gives the best first impression and tends to avoid the busiest visitor flows.
- Check the official Château de Versailles website for combined tickets or a Passport that includes the Trianons-buying the correct ticket in advance avoids wasting time queuing at separate entrances.
Best Time to Visit Grand Trianon #
Visit the Grand Trianon in spring or on weekday mornings in shoulder months to avoid the largest Versailles crowds.
