Gramvousa refers to two small islets off the northwestern tip of Crete, within Chania regional unit. The larger islet, Imeri Gramvousa, is notable for the ruins of a Venetian fortress overlooking the sea and nearby Balos lagoon.

The site is a popular day-trip destination for swimming, snorkelling and visiting the fortress ruins, with steep paths up to the castle and panoramic views of the surrounding coastline. Boat services from Kissamos and other local ports provide the usual access.

The fortress on Imeri Gramvousa dates to the Venetian period when coastal fortifications were built or reinforced to control maritime approaches; the ruins remain visible and include walls, towers and cisterns. The islets later figure in local maritime and piracy history.

Gramvousa lies off the northwest coast of Crete near the entrance to Balos lagoon, reached by short boat crossings from the mainland near Kissamos.

  • Venetian fortress and access: Imeri Gramvousa contains the remains of a Venetian-era fortress built during the Ottoman-Venetian conflicts and is commonly visited on boat trips from Kissamos and nearby ports.
