Gračanica Monastery

Gračanica Monastery is a Serbian Orthodox monastery near Pristina in Kosovo, founded in the early 14th century and noted for its medieval architecture. It is one of the region’s best-preserved examples of Byzantine-influenced Serbian monastic architecture.

The monastery’s core is the domed church with a compact cruciform plan and rich exterior masonry; visitors come to see the church interior and the well-preserved fresco cycle dating to the 14th century. The site remains an active religious community and draws interest for both its art and architecture.

The monastery was built under the patronage of the Serbian King Stefan Uroš II Milutin in the early 1300s and has survived as a functioning monastic complex since the medieval period. It has undergone repairs and conservation work over time while retaining its original plan and important medieval frescoes.

Gračanica sits a short drive southeast of Pristina in central Kosovo, on relatively flat ground amid farmland and small settlements outside the city.
