The Government Palace is the seat of Peru’s executive power, located on Lima’s Plaza Mayor in the historic center; the site has been the administrative center of the city since its founding in 1535. It occupies the location of Francisco Pizarro’s colonial-era residence and remains one of Lima’s principal civic buildings.

Architectural and ceremonial features on the exterior face onto Plaza Mayor and the building includes official balconies and formal reception rooms used for state functions. The palace is notable for public ceremonies and a mounted or foot guard presence that performs ceremonial duties visible from the square.

The site has served as the center of colonial government under the Spanish and later as the presidential palace of the Republic of Peru, undergoing multiple rebuilds and renovations over the centuries. Its role shifted from a conquistador’s residence to the consolidated seat of national executive authority after independence in the 19th century.

Situated on Plaza Mayor in Lima’s historic district, the palace stands directly opposite the Cathedral of Lima and is within walking distance of other colonial-era landmarks in the city’s core.

Access is by taxi or city bus to downtown Lima; once in the Historic Centre the palace is reached on foot from nearby central streets and plazas. Many hotels in Miraflores and San Isidro offer a short drive into the Plaza Mayor area (allow extra time for traffic).

• Go to Plaza Mayor early (before 10:30) to photograph the Government Palace façade and balconies before crowds and official cordons appear.
• If you plan to enter the Palace for a guided visit, bring original photo ID (passport or national ID); entry is subject to security checks and access can be restricted on official/state occasions.
• Check the schedule for military/sentry ceremonies in advance-these public displays are popular photo opportunities but are sometimes rescheduled for state events.
