Gournia
Archaeological Site Bronze Age Minoan town ruins on eastern Crete
A Minoan town on eastern Crete with well-preserved streets, houses and pottery remains from the Bronze Age. Archaeology enthusiasts visit to study urban layout and domestic life before Classical Greece.
Gournia is a Bronze Age Minoan town on the island of Crete, exposed as an archaeological settlement with compact streets, houses and a central plaza. The site was excavated in the early 20th century and is valued for the clarity of its urban layout.
On site you can walk among the foundations of domestic buildings, see paved lanes and a clearly defined central plaza, and visit a small nearby peak sanctuary that served ritual functions. Interpretive signs outline the plan and allow visitors to view house layouts and courtyards.
The site was excavated and published by archaeologist Harriet Boyd (later Harriet Boyd Hawes) during fieldwork in the early 1900s; her work brought Gournia to the attention of Aegean prehistory studies. Finds from the excavation are held in regional museums.
Gournia sits on Crete’s island landscape; the ruins occupy a compact area open to visitors and are typically visited as part of explorations of eastern Crete.

- Preservation and visitability: Surviving foundations and street layouts make it one of the better-preserved examples of a small Minoan town, so pathways and house ruins are easy to follow on site.
