Gouina Falls is a cataract on the Sénégal River in Mali’s Kayes Region. The falls form a notable break in the river and are a local geographical landmark.

The cascade is most impressive during the West African rainy season when river discharge increases; at lower flows the fall is less powerful. The site has drawn attention for its potential for hydropower development in recent years.

Gouina Falls is a natural feature of the Sénégal River; in recent decades it has been considered in planning and development discussions related to river management and energy projects.

The falls lie on the Sénégal River in southwestern Mali’s Kayes Region, in the river corridor that runs westward toward the border with Mauritania and the Atlantic.

  • Best time to visit: Flow on the falls is strongest in the rainy season, making that period the most dramatic time to visit and to view the cataract.
