Gottorf Castle is a historic ducal castle complex in Schleswig, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany, located on an island in the Schlei inlet. It served as the seat of the dukes of Schleswig-Holstein-Gottorf and today houses state museums and exhibition spaces.
The complex contains architectural layers from the Middle Ages through the Baroque period and incorporates formal garden space on the island. Visitors come for the museums, exhibition galleries and the castle’s historic interiors.
Over centuries the estate has served ducal administrative and representative functions and underwent multiple rebuildings that reflect changing tastes and needs. In the 20th century parts of the complex were re-purposed as museum spaces to display regional art, history and archaeological collections.
