Archaeological Border complex of Hedeby and the Danevirke Historical Site

The Archaeological Border complex of Hedeby and the Danevirke comprises a Viking-Age trading town and a long-running system of earthen and timber fortifications in Schleswig-Holstein, northern Germany.

The ensemble brings together the settlement of Hedeby, with archaeological remains of a major 8th-11th-century emporium, and the Danevirke, a fortified boundary made up of ramparts and ditches constructed and remodelled in several phases from the Iron Age into the medieval period. The site illustrates frontier defence and long-distance trade in the early Middle Ages.

Hedeby grew as a multifunctional port and marketplace in the Viking Age and later declined in the 11th century. The Danevirke was repeatedly modified by regional powers to control movement across the Jutland isthmus and to protect southern Danish territories.

The complex lies near the modern town of Schleswig in the state of Schleswig-Holstein, along the Schlei inlet and the historic land corridor between the North Sea and the Baltic Sea.

Hedeby (Haithabu) is adjacent to the town of Schleswig in Schleswig‑Holstein. From Schleswig Hauptbahnhof it’s a 10-15 minute taxi or bike ride to the Hedeby Museum and the Danevirke ramparts (roughly 3 km). By car, follow B76 toward Schleswig and signs for Haithabu/Danevirke; parking is available at the museum.

• Start at the Hedeby Viking Museum (Wikingermuseum Haithabu); it's the best introduction before walking the Danevirke earthworks.
• Bring windproof clothing - the Schleswig plain gets sharp breezes that carry historical imagination along with it.
• If cycling, use the dedicated bike routes along the Schlei inlet; they connect Hedeby, Danevirke and Schleswig town without busy roads.
