Main image

Gotska Sandön National Park is a Swedish national park located on a sandy island in the Baltic Sea north of the island of Gotland. It was established to protect the island’s dunes, beaches and coastal forests.

The island is dominated by long sandy beaches, dune systems and pockets of pine forest, with habitat for seabirds and specialized coastal plant communities. Access is seasonal and mainly by boat during the summer months.

The national park was created in 1909 and has been managed to conserve its distinctive dune and shoreline environments. Visitor infrastructure is limited to protect the island’s fragile habitats.

Gotska Sandön lies off the northern coast of Gotland in the central Baltic Sea and is administratively part of Sweden. The island is isolated from the mainland and reachable by scheduled boats in the summer.

How to Get to Gotska Sandön National Park #

Gotska Sandön is an island national park north of Gotland and is reached by scheduled passenger boats during the summer season from Fårösund on Gotland. To get to Fårösund you travel north from Visby by car or regional bus (roughly a one‑hour drive depending on route), then board the seasonal boat to the island; cars are not permitted on Gotska Sandön and you disembark to walk short distances to the park’s trails and beaches.

Tips for Visiting Gotska Sandön National Park #

  • Take the scheduled seasonal ferry from Fårö (book well in advance for July-August) rather than trying to reach the island on charter boats; the park's landing point is the usual arrival and departure spot.
  • Arrive early or late in the day to escape the busiest hours at the main sandy beach; most visitors stay near the shore, so follow the marked trails into the island's dunes and pine woods for quieter hiking and birdwatching.
  • Remember Gotska Sandön is car-free and protected-use the island's trails and information panels to find viewpoints and the lighthouse; many travellers miss the interior pine- and dune-scapes by focusing only on the beach.
