Gotska Sandön is a sandy island and national park in the Baltic Sea north of Gotland, Sweden, designated to protect its dunes, conifer stands, and coastal habitats. The island is managed as a national park and is valued for its natural landscape rather than built attractions.

The island’s landscape is dominated by dunes, beaches, and pockets of forest with open sandy plains and extensive driftwood-strewn shorelines. Wildlife viewing, birdwatching and walking along long sandy beaches are the principal visitor activities.

Gotska Sandön National Park was established to protect the island’s unique coastal ecosystems and has been managed as a protected area since the early 20th century. Human impact has been limited by seasonal visitor numbers and restrictions on vehicles.

The island lies in the Baltic Sea north of Gotland, reachable by scheduled boat services from the Gotland coast in summer. The nearest inhabited places on the Swedish mainland are on Gotland, and the island is remote and exposed to the sea.

  • Access: Access is seasonal and primarily by ferry from the northern Gotland coast; there are no cars on the island during the high-use season, so visitors travel on foot or by bicycle.

Tips for Visiting Gotska Sandön #

  • Gotska Sandön is reached only by scheduled ferry from Fårösund (Gotland) and service is strongly seasonal-check timetables and book passage or accommodation well in advance during summer months when day-trippers fill boats.
  • The island is largely car-free and best explored by bicycle or on foot; rent a bike at the landing to reach dunes, forests and the lighthouse beyond the busy main beach, where most visitors stay.
  • If you want wildlife or quieter beaches, aim for early morning or late afternoon when day-tripper ferries are fewer; bring supplies with you because facilities on the island are basic and limited outside the main visitor area.
