Gotland
Island Swedish island famed for medieval Visby and limestone coast
The Baltic island of Gotland attracts visitors with Visby’s medieval walls and cobbled streets, limestone cliffs and rauk sea stacks, sandy beaches, cycling routes and summer cultural festivals.
Gotland is Sweden’s largest island in the Baltic Sea and an administrative county in its own right, long inhabited and culturally distinct. The island combines agricultural interior, limestone coastlines and several towns and villages, the largest being Visby.
Key attractions include the medieval town of Visby, with an extensive preserved city wall and many medieval churches, and the coastal limestone rauks especially around Fe5rf6. Visitors travel for history, beaches and summer festivals.
Settlement on Gotland goes back many centuries and the island played a major role in medieval Baltic trade as part of the Hanseatic network. Visby was an important trading town and retains much of its medieval fabric; the town is protected as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Geographically, Gotland sits in the Baltic Sea off Sweden’s east coast and is reached by ferry and air links from mainland Sweden, with Visby as the principal transport and service centre.
