Gotland

Island Swedish island famed for medieval Visby and limestone coast

The Baltic island of Gotland attracts visitors with Visby’s medieval walls and cobbled streets, limestone cliffs and rauk sea stacks, sandy beaches, cycling routes and summer cultural festivals.

Gotland is Sweden’s largest island in the Baltic Sea and an administrative county in its own right, long inhabited and culturally distinct. The island combines agricultural interior, limestone coastlines and several towns and villages, the largest being Visby.

Key attractions include the medieval town of Visby, with an extensive preserved city wall and many medieval churches, and the coastal limestone rauks especially around Fe5rf6. Visitors travel for history, beaches and summer festivals.

Settlement on Gotland goes back many centuries and the island played a major role in medieval Baltic trade as part of the Hanseatic network. Visby was an important trading town and retains much of its medieval fabric; the town is protected as a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Geographically, Gotland sits in the Baltic Sea off Sweden’s east coast and is reached by ferry and air links from mainland Sweden, with Visby as the principal transport and service centre.

  • UNESCO Visby: Visby is a UNESCO World Heritage site noted for its intact medieval town wall and large number of medieval church ruins.
  • Size and population: Gotland is Sweden's largest island, covering roughly 3,000 square kilometres with a year-round population of around 60,000.

What to See #

  • Visby: Visby town - a medieval Hanseatic town with preserved city walls, church ruins and a UNESCO World Heritage designation.
  • Fe5rf6 and rauks: Fe5rf6 and the rauk coastlines - offshore island and limestone stack formations popular for geology and coastal scenery.

How to Get to Gotland #

Gotland is reached by ferry or plane to Visby. Regular car and passenger ferries (Destination Gotland) operate from Nynäshamn (south of Stockholm) and seasonally from Oskarshamn to Visby; ferries accommodate cars and take several hours. There are also scheduled flights from Stockholm Arlanda and Stockholm Bromma to Visby Airport. Visby town and the harbour are adjacent - the ferry or airport is a short walk (typically under 10 minutes) into Visby’s historic centre.

Tips for Visiting Gotland #

  • Most ferries land at Visby-use Visby as your base and book crossings (Destination Gotland or other operators) in advance for summer travel to avoid sold-out sailings.
  • Avoid the peak of midsummer (July) when Visby's walls and main attractions are busiest; late May-June and September offer milder crowds while still good weather.
  • Explore beyond Visby: Gotland has around ninety medieval rural churches and many small coastal villages and rauk formations (especially on Fårö) that most day-trippers miss-rent a car or bike to reach them.
