Gorski Kotar

Gorski Kotar is a mountainous, forested region in western Croatia within Primorje-Gorski Kotar County, known locally for its dense woods and mountain landscapes. The area contains protected parks and traditional rural settlements.

Trail networks, forest routes and mountain roads link small towns and mountain huts; visitors come for hiking, wildlife watching and winter sports on local slopes. The terrain includes karst features, alpine meadows and mixed broadleaf-conifer forests.

Historically the region developed around forestry, pastoralism and small-scale agriculture; parts of it have been protected as national and nature parks to conserve habitat and biodiversity. Modern tourism focuses on outdoor recreation and rural cultural heritage.

Gorski Kotar lies between Croatia’s Adriatic coast and the inland plains, forming a natural highland between Rijeka on the coast and continental Croatia. Towns and road links provide access from the coast and from inland cities.
