How to Get to Goroka
Goroka is principally accessed by domestic air into Goroka Airport (GKA) or by road using highland PMVs. The airport is close to town and taxi transfers are brief.
Goroka Airport (GKA): Goroka is served by Goroka Airport, with multiple daily domestic flights from Port Moresby and other highlands centres (PNG Air, Air Niugini). Taxi from the airport to Goroka town centre is about 5-15 minutes and typically costs around 10-25 PGK.
(No international airports): International access is via Port Moresby (POM) with onward domestic flights to GKA (flight time under 2 hours).
Train: There are no passenger trains in Goroka.
Bus / PMV: Local minibuses/PMVs run between Goroka and neighbouring towns; long-distance coach-style services link Goroka with Kainantu and other highland centres. Fares are low for local trips (a few kina) but journeys can be slow on winding highland roads.
How to Get Around Goroka #
Goroka’s central area is small and you can walk between the main market, shops and a handful of cafes. Taxis and PMVs operate for trips farther out; flights link Goroka to other highland towns. Bring cash, as card acceptance is limited. Roads to surrounding villages are rough and transport timetables can change at short notice.

Nightlife in Goroka #
Nightlife is modest outside major events. Goroka has a few pubs and hotel bars; the town becomes much busier and more festive during the annual Goroka Show, when music and evening gatherings increase. On regular nights expect low-key social venues rather than a club scene.
Shopping in Goroka #
The town market is the best place to buy fresh produce, local coffee and simple handicrafts. Small shops around the centre sell daily necessities; for a larger selection you’ll need to visit a bigger city. If you time your trip for the Goroka Show, there are more crafts and cultural items on sale.
