Main image

Gornergrat is a rocky ridge and mountain summit in the Swiss Alps at 3,089 metres, above the resort town of Zermatt in the canton of Valais. It is renowned for wide panoramic views of the Matterhorn and the Monte Rosa massif.

A rack railway, the Gornergrat Railway, runs from Zermatt to the summit station, giving passengers direct access to the high viewing terrace. The summit area includes a hotel and viewing platforms offering uninterrupted views over the surrounding glaciers and peaks.

The site is popular year-round for sightseeing, photography and as a starting point for alpine hiking in summer and snow activities in winter. Its easy rail access makes it a major viewpoint in the Alps for visitors who want close views of the Matterhorn without technical climbing.

Located above Zermatt in the Valais region of southwestern Switzerland, Gornergrat overlooks the Gorner Glacier system and occupies a ridge on the eastern side of the valley containing Zermatt.

  • Summit Elevation: Summit elevation is 3,089 metres, making it one of the highest open-air viewing platforms in the Alps reachable by rail.
  • Historic Railway: The rack railway opened in the late 19th century and has provided direct access from Zermatt to the summit station since then.

How to Get to Gornergrat #

Gornergrat is reached from the car-free village of Zermatt by the Gornergratbahn rack railway, which departs from Zermatt Bahnhof and climbs to the Gornergrat station (journey ~30-40 minutes). If driving from outside the valley, park in Täsch (large parking facilities) and take the frequent shuttle train or taxi service (Täsch-Zermatt shuttle ~12 minutes) into Zermatt, then the Gornergratbahn departs adjacent to the village station.

Tips for Visiting Gornergrat #

  • Take the Gornergrat Railway from Zermatt and plan to travel early morning or late afternoon-mornings usually bring the clearest air for Matterhorn and glacier views while sunset light is spectacular and crowds thin.
  • Buy timed tickets for the Gornergratbahn in advance during high season to secure a seat on preferred trains; arriving at the Zermatt station 15-20 minutes before departure makes boarding smoother.
  • After arriving at the summit, walk a short distance off the main platform toward the ridge viewpoints (rather than staying by the station building) for less-obstructed panoramas of the Gorner Glacier and surrounding peaks.
