Gorham's Cave
Archaeological Site Limestone cave complex in Gibraltar with Neanderthal remains
A sea‑level cave on Gibraltar, Gorham’s Cave forms part of a UNESCO site for its Paleolithic deposits; visitors arrive for guided tours, coastal views and the area’s Neanderthal archaeological importance.
Gorham’s Cave is a coastal cave on the eastern side of the Rock of Gibraltar, notable for deep archaeological deposits associated with Neanderthal occupation. The site preserves Middle Paleolithic (Mousterian) assemblages and faunal remains.
Interest focuses on the archaeological importance rather than show‑cave tourism: the cave contains stratified deposits with stone tools and other remains that document Neanderthal activity. The broader Gorham’s Cave Complex includes several adjacent caves that together provide a long sequence of Pleistocene occupations.
The caves accumulated deposits throughout the Pleistocene and were investigated by archaeologists from the 20th century onward; findings have been used to argue that Gibraltar was a refugium where Neanderthals persisted late into the last glacial period. Scientific studies date human and Neanderthal activity in the caves to the Late Pleistocene.
The cave sits on the eastern face of the Rock of Gibraltar, above the Mediterranean shoreline, within the British Overseas Territory of Gibraltar and close to the urban area of Gibraltar town.
- Archaeological significance: Recognised for its stratified layers containing Neanderthal material culture and faunal remains dating to the Late Pleistocene, including evidence of some of the last Neanderthal occupations in western Europe.
- UNESCO inscription: Designated as part of the Gorham's Cave Complex UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2016 for its scientific value in understanding Neanderthal lifeways.
