The Gorges de l’Areuse is a narrow limestone gorge carved by the Areuse River in the Canton of Neuchâtel, western Switzerland, extending for several kilometres through steep rock walls. It is appreciated locally for its compact scale and accessible riverside paths.
A maintained trail runs through the gorge and provides bridges and viewpoints that keep hikers close to the river and cliffs. The route is popular for short hikes and nature walks rather than long alpine excursions.
The gorge was formed by long-term erosion of the local limestone by the Areuse River, producing vertical rock faces and narrow channels. The area is part of the regional fluvial and karst landscape typical of this part of Switzerland.
Geographically the gorge lies in the canton of Neuchâtel, between upland villages in the Areuse valley; the nearest local settlements provide trailheads and parking, with larger regional centres in the surrounding Jura foothills.
- Trail length and access: A well-signposted riverside trail follows the gorge for several kilometres and includes wooden walkways and small footbridges for close river views.
- Best time to visit: Best experienced in spring and summer when trails are dry; sections can be slippery after heavy rain.
