Gonur Depe

Gonur Depe is a Bronze Age archaeological site in Turkmenistan’s Mary Region that served as a major urban centre of the Bactria-Margiana Archaeological Complex (BMAC). The site contains ruins of a fortified citadel, residential districts and a large necropolis and is a key location for understanding Bronze Age urbanism in Central Asia.

Excavations have uncovered palatial and temple structures, craft areas and richly furnished burial mounds that demonstrate long-distance connections and complex social organisation. Artifacts recovered include ceramics, seals and metalwork that illustrate the site’s cultural importance.

The site was explored extensively during late 20th-century archaeological campaigns and is considered central to studies of the BMAC cultural horizon. Research at Gonur Depe has informed understanding of irrigation-based urban settlement and ritual practice in the Bronze Age oasis systems of the region.

Gonur Depe sits on an irrigated plain in southeastern Turkmenistan’s Mary Region, within the wider oasis landscape associated with ancient river systems and agricultural networks.
