Gonio (fortress)
Archaeological Site Ancient Roman-Byzantine fortress and archaeological site
At Georgia’s Black Sea coast near Batumi, Gonio fortress combines Roman and medieval walls, archaeological trenches and a sandy beach; visitors tour ruins and learn about regional antiquity.
Gonio (also called Gonio-Apsaros) is a fortified site on Georgia’s Black Sea coast in Adjara, near the village of Gonio. The site occupies a long-used defensive position and preserves masonry visible above ground from multiple periods.
The complex presents layered remains of fortifications, with curtain walls and towers visible around an inner enclosure and areas of exposed archaeological trenching. Visitors commonly inspect the ramparts, walk the outer wall paths and view on-site excavation areas where finds are displayed.
The site originated in antiquity and was occupied and fortified through Roman, Byzantine, medieval and Ottoman periods; it served defensive and administrative functions for successive rulers. Archaeological work in the 20th and 21st centuries has revealed Roman-era structures beneath later rebuilds and continues to inform the complex phasing of the fortress.
The fortress sits on a coastal plain on the eastern Black Sea shore, roughly 12 km south of Batumi and close to the mouth of the Chorokhi/Çoruh river. The surrounding landscape is coastal with nearby beaches and agricultural lowlands.
- Location tip: Sits on the Black Sea coast about 12 km south of Batumi, making it a short drive from the city for half-day visits.
- Religious tradition: Local tradition identifies a burial associated with the apostle Matthias inside the complex, a claim that draws interest though it is not archaeologically settled.
