How to Get to Gonbad-e Qabus (tower)
Gonbad-e Qabus is about 20 km southwest of the city of Gonbad-e Kavus. From Gonbad-e Kavus city center take local road 22 heading southwest; the monument is signposted and reachable by car in 20-30 minutes. Minibuses and taxis run from the city; drivers familiar with the site will drop visitors at the small parking area a short walk from the tower.
Tips for Visiting Gonbad-e Qabus (tower)
- Approach at dawn or late afternoon for the best light on the brickwork; mid-day flattens the relief.
- Walk the low perimeter path counterclockwise to read the inscriptions and note the worn stones where procession feet passed for centuries.
- Bring a hat and water in summer - the Golestan plains amplify heat from the tower's baked-brick surface.
- Combine with a visit to nearby Qabus city markets for a look at Turkmen crafts and to avoid a long return to the highway.
