Commissioned as a funerary monument by the Ziyarid ruler Qabus ibn Voshmgir and completed in 1006 CE, the tower functioned as a tomb and symbolic monument. It has survived largely intact through subsequent centuries and is now conserved as an important historic monument.

Minibuses and taxis run from the city; drivers familiar with the site will drop visitors at the small parking area a short walk from the tower.
