Golem Grad
Island Lake Prespa island with Byzantine ruins and wildlife
Sitting in Lake Prespa, Golem Grad is an uninhabited island with archaeological ruins and an abandoned chapel. Accessible by boat, it draws visitors for short guided walks, birdlife observations and the island’s quiet, ruinated structures.
Golem Grad is a small, uninhabited island in Lake Prespa in southwestern North Macedonia, known locally as ‘Snake Island.’ It contains archaeological remains including foundations and ruins of churches dating to the Byzantine and medieval periods.
The island’s ruins and scattered masonry are set among rocky terrain and woodland that support bird life and small mammals. The site is visited for its archaeological interest, natural setting and the novelty of the island’s snake population.
Historically the island hosted a small community and a number of ecclesiastical structures; these fell into ruin over centuries, leaving the fragmentary remains observed today. Because it is uninhabited the island has no built visitor infrastructure and is managed with a light-touch approach to conservation.
Golem Grad sits in the central area of Lake Prespa, reachable by a short boat trip from lakeside villages in the Prespa region. The island is part of the transboundary Prespa basin and lies close to the borders with Greece and Albania.
