Goldstream Provincial Park
Park Coastal park known for salmon runs and waterfalls
Coastal provincial park near Victoria on Vancouver Island, known for an autumn salmon run, old-growth forest trails, Goldstream River waterfalls and regular bald-eagle sightings.
Goldstream Provincial Park is a provincial park on southern Vancouver Island in British Columbia, Canada, located near the town of Langford west of Victoria. It is well known regionally for its autumn salmon run and the large numbers of bald eagles that congregate along the river.
The park contains a waterfall with a short walking approach and a network of forest trails that pass through mature conifer forest. Recreational facilities include a campground, picnic areas and an interpretive Nature House with seasonal programs. The riverside habitat and trails make it a popular half-day destination for wildlife viewing, short hikes and day use.
The park is administered by BC Parks; its name reflects 19th-century gold prospecting in the area though the present park is managed for conservation and recreation. Over time facilities have been added to support day visitors and campers while retaining valley forest and river habitat.
The park sits on the southern slope of Vancouver Island’s coastal hills, immediately west of the suburban corridor around Langford and a short drive from central Victoria. Main access is from the highway corridor that runs out of Victoria toward the island interior.
- Salmon run and eagles: The salmon run peaks in late autumn, and large numbers of bald eagles gather to feed along the river at that time.
- Waterfall viewpoint: A short paved trail and boardwalk lead to the main waterfall viewpoint, making it accessible to most visitors.
- Old-growth forest: The park is managed by BC Parks and includes old-growth Douglas fir and western red cedar in its valley bottom.
What to See #
- Goldstream Falls: A short, signed path leads from the main parking area to a viewing platform above the waterfall and canyon; the walk is family-friendly and steep in places.
- Goldstream River: A cold, forested river that runs through the park and is the focus of the autumn salmon run that attracts many birds of prey.
- Goldstream Nature House: A small interpretive centre offering natural-history displays and seasonal programs run by park staff and volunteers.
- Campground: A campground with vehicle-accessible sites and nearby picnic areas; popular in summer and used as a base for local hikes.
