The Golden Rider is a gilded equestrian statue of Elector Augustus II the Strong located on the Neustädter Markt in Dresden, Saxony, erected in the 18th century. It is one of Dresden Neustadt’s most recognisable public monuments.
The statue is the main focal point of the Neustädter Markt and is viewed from the surrounding square and streets; it marks an important urban axis connecting Neustadt with the historic centre across the Elbe. The gilding makes the figure visible from several blocks away and it is commonly photographed from the square and nearby approaches.
Commissioned by Augustus II as a public monument, the statue dates to the 18th century and has been maintained as part of Dresden’s historic streetscape since its installation. It has survived city changes and restorations over the centuries.
Located on the north bank of the Elbe in central Dresden, the monument stands on Neustädter Markt near the Augustus Bridge and other Neustadt streets and squares.
