Golden Mountains of Altai
Nature Reserve Mountainous area with diverse ecosystems and ancient archaeological sites
The Altai range encompasses glaciers, alpine meadows and remote plateaus; visitors undertake trekking, study glacial landforms and encounter traditional pastoral communities in Siberia’s mountainous west.
The Golden Mountains of Altai are a transnational natural ensemble of high mountain ranges, plateaus and protected reserves in southern Siberia noted for glaciers, mountain ecosystems and endemic biodiversity. The area contains outstanding alpine landscapes and habitats.
Glaciated peaks, high plateaus and intact steppe-to-forest transitions dominate the terrain, with notable features such as snowfields and small alpine lakes. The diversity of habitats supports species adapted to montane and cold-climate conditions and offers extensive wilderness scenery.
The mountain landscapes have long been shaped by glaciation and geological uplift; protection and reserve status were established in the 20th century to conserve glacial, ecological and cultural values. Archaeological and cultural traces of past human use occur in some areas.
The Golden Mountains are located in the Altai region of southern Siberia in the Russian Federation, in the mountainous borderlands of Central Asia and encompassing highland territories within the Altai Republic and neighboring administrative areas.
- Ecological importance: The property contains alpine and glacial environments that provide habitat for high-altitude species and act as a source of inland watercourses.

- Mount Belukha: Mount Belukha, the highest peak in the Altai region and a landmark of the mountain complex.
- Ukok Plateau and ranges: The Ukok Plateau and adjoining mountain ranges that contain glacial landscapes, alpine meadows and steppe-vegetation mosaics.
- Reserve units: Protected nature reserves and biosphere areas that make up the serial natural property, preserving glacier-fed watersheds and habitats.
Tips for Visiting Golden Mountains of Altai #
- Visit in the summer months (roughly June-September) when mountain passes and unsealed roads are most likely to be passable; much of the Golden Mountains of Altai is remote and road access can be seasonal.
- If you plan to go to high plateaux such as Ukok, organise a guided trip and obtain any necessary permits in advance - some border‑area zones are controlled and require official permission and an experienced local operator.
- Base yourself in Gorno‑Altaysk or a regional town and join organised excursions to the core protected areas rather than attempting independent travel into remote valleys; local guides know the best viewpoints and conservation rules that casual visitors often miss.
Best Time to Visit Golden Mountains of Altai #
