Golden Gate Highlands National Park

Golden Gate Highlands National Park is a protected area in South Africa’s Free State province known for its dramatic yellow and orange sandstone cliffs and highland grassland. The park preserves sandstone formations and montane grassland habitats that support a variety of bird and mammal species.

A network of short walks and longer hiking routes leads to viewpoints and cliff edges that overlook broad valleys and the park’s characteristic rock faces; the most recognisable formation is a tall, freestanding buttress known locally as a sentinel. Wildlife viewing and scenic drives are common activities.

The area was set aside to protect the sandstone landscapes and remaining grassland, and it has been managed for both conservation and visitor access with designated trails and lookout points. Park facilities provide entry information and marked routes for walkers.

The park lies in the eastern Free State near the small town of Clarens and forms part of the highland region linking the Drakensberg foothills to the interior grasslands.
