Golden Gate Bridge
Building Suspension bridge spanning San Francisco Bay
Spanning the Golden Gate strait, the orange towers and suspension cables dominate San Francisco’s entrance. Visitors cross or cycle the 1.7-mile span, photograph skyline and Alcatraz views, and explore nearby Presidio trails and viewpoints.
The Golden Gate Bridge is a suspension bridge spanning the Golden Gate strait between San Francisco and Marin County in California, United States. It opened in 1937 and has a main span of 1,280 metres, making it one of the longest suspension spans of its time.
The structure measures about 2.7 kilometres from end to end and features two 227-metre towers that rise above the water. Walkways and cycle paths run across the bridge and provide uninterrupted views of the bay, Alcatraz, and the San Francisco skyline. Popular land viewpoints include Battery Spencer on the Marin side and Crissy Field and Fort Point on the San Francisco side; each is within a few kilometres of the bridge.
Construction was led by chief engineer Joseph B. Strauss and took place during the 1930s, with the bridge opening to the public in May 1937. It was built to improve road access to Marin County and has undergone multiple maintenance and seismic retrofit projects since opening.
The bridge spans the Golden Gate strait at the northwestern edge of San Francisco Bay, connecting the city of San Francisco with Marin County. It sits about 4 kilometres north of downtown San Francisco and is framed by coastal cliffs and the Marin Headlands.
- Best viewing times: Best light for photographs is usually early morning or late afternoon when fog often frames the bridge; viewpoints at Battery Spencer and Crissy Field offer different perspectives.
- Pedestrian access: Pedestrian walkways run along the east and west sides of the bridge and are open daily, though access rules and hours can vary seasonally.
How to Get to Golden Gate Bridge #
From central San Francisco you can drive north on US-101 to the Golden Gate Bridge (follow signs for Golden Gate Bridge/Marin County); the distance from downtown (Union Square) is roughly 4-6 miles (6-10 km) depending on route and takes about 15-30 minutes in typical traffic. The bridge’s Welcome Center and parking are on the San Francisco side near the southern approach.
Public transit: San Francisco Muni bus 28/28R runs from the Richmond district/Golden Gate Park area toward the bridge vicinity; from common stops it’s a short walk (5-15 minutes) to pedestrian viewpoints and the bridge walkway.
Tips for Visiting Golden Gate Bridge #
- Cross or photograph the bridge early in the morning (before 9 AM) to avoid the strongest winds, heaviest vehicle/bike traffic and typical daytime crowds; summer mornings are often clearer before the afternoon marine layer rolls in.
- For classic sweeping views, drive or walk to Battery Spencer on the Marin side (short stairs from the small parking area off Conzelman Road) or to Fort Point under the San Francisco end of the bridge for different, photographer-friendly angles.
- Use the east (San Francisco) pedestrian walkway when crossing on foot for safer access and easier connections to Crissy Field, the Presidio and public transit; west/marin-side access can be crowded with cyclists during peak hours.
Best Time to Visit Golden Gate Bridge #
Visit in early autumn (September-November) for the clearest, warmest conditions and the best views across the bay.
