Gol Gumbaz
Monument 16th-century mausoleum with massive dome and whispering gallery
Gol Gumbaz in Vijayapura (Bijapur) is a 17th‑century mausoleum with a vast masonry dome and a famous whispering gallery; visitors study Deccan Sultanate architecture.
Gol Gumbaz is the mausoleum of Sultan Mohammed Adil Shah in Vijayanagara-era Bijapur (now Vijayapura), Karnataka, built in the mid-17th century. The monument is famous for its massive hemispherical dome and the vast single-chamber tomb beneath it.
The tomb chamber is an unbroken square room beneath the dome and is surrounded by a high gallery and four massive corner towers. Visitors commonly note the strong echo and acoustic phenomena inside the dome, often described as a ‘whispering gallery.’
The mausoleum was commissioned by Sultan Mohammed Adil Shah of the Adil Shahi dynasty and completed in the 17th century; it represents late-Deccan Islamic funerary architecture and was constructed to house royal cenotaphs.
Gol Gumbaz stands on the western edge of Vijayapura (Bijapur) and is set within a walled complex that includes gardens and ancillary structures; the site is a principal monument of the city and is accessible from the urban centre.
- Dome size: The dome spans about 44 metres in diameter, making it one of the largest single-chamber domes from the pre-modern period.
- Whispering gallery: A pronounced acoustic effect known as the 'whispering gallery' causes sounds to be clearly audible across the central chamber and is a notable visitor feature.
What to See #
- Central mausoleum chamber: Main tomb chamber is a large square hall beneath the dome that contains the cenotaphs of Sultan Mohammed Adil Shah and family within a single, unpartitioned space.
- Gallery and corner towers: Outer gallery and corner towers provide stepped access and viewpoints around the tomb complex; they also contain secondary graves and the elevated 'whispering gallery' encircling the dome.

Tips for Visiting Gol Gumbaz #
- Visit early morning or late afternoon to avoid Bijapur's midday heat and to experience the whispering-gallery acoustics inside the dome when groups are smaller.
- Buy your ticket at the ASI entrance counter and head straight to the interior gallery - the huge dome's echo and the light patterns on the inner surfaces are best appreciated from the central floor and the upper gallery.
- Avoid weekends and Indian public-holiday afternoons when local visitors peak; a weekday visit right at opening gives the clearest, least crowded access to photograph the dome and crypt.
