Göbekli Tepe
Archaeological Site Neolithic ceremonial site with monumental stone pillars
Near Şanlıurfa, Göbekli Tepe contains T-shaped pillars carved with animals and dates to the pre-pottery Neolithic; researchers and visitors come to see early monumental stonework that precedes settled agriculture.
Göbekli Tepe is a prehistoric hilltop sanctuary in southeastern Anatolia notable for its large T-shaped limestone pillars and decorated stone enclosures. It dates to the Pre-Pottery Neolithic and is among the earliest known examples of monumental architecture.
The site features multiple circular and oval enclosures with centrally placed paired pillars, some decorated with animal reliefs; several pillars reach heights of around 5 metres. The scale and date of these structures have changed understanding of social complexity in the early Neolithic.
Excavations began in the 1990s under German archaeologist Klaus Schmidt and have revealed successive construction and infill phases, with evidence that the site was deliberately buried in the 9th millennium BCE. Artefacts and faunal remains indicate ritual and communal activities rather than a permanent urban settlement.
Göbekli Tepe sits on a limestone plateau approximately 15 kilometres northeast of the city of Şanlıurfa in southeastern Turkey, overlooking the Harran plain and surrounding agricultural landscapes.
- Age: Radiocarbon dates place primary construction phases between roughly 9600 and 8200 BCE, making it one of the oldest known monumental stone sites.
- Sculpture: Many carved pillars are anthropomorphic T-shaped stones with reliefs of animals such as boars, foxes and birds; the pillars are often arranged in circular enclosures.
What to See #
- Enclosures (Pillared Rings): Circular and oval stone enclosures containing T-shaped limestone pillars up to about 5.5 metres tall, often decorated with carved animal reliefs.
- Excavated terraces and deposits: Open areas and terraces showing successive building phases with midden deposits and postholes; the site preserves multiple occupation layers dating to the Pre-Pottery Neolithic.
How to Get to Göbekli Tepe #
Göbekli Tepe is outside Şanlıurfa city; by road it’s roughly 15 km from Şanlıurfa city centre (about a 20-30 minute drive). Most visitors take organized day tours from Şanlıurfa or hire a taxi/minibus (dolmuş) toward the Örencik/Göbekli Tepe area.
There is a visitor centre and parking near the site, and from the parking/centre the excavation area is a short walk. If you rely on public transit, ask locally in Şanlıurfa about minibuses or tour shuttles that call at the site.
Tips for Visiting Göbekli Tepe #
- Visit early morning when temperatures are cooler and guided groups are smaller; the site is exposed and midday can be both hot and crowded with organized tours from Şanlıurfa.
- Start at the visitor centre to see the introductory exhibition and get oriented before climbing to the exposed enclosures; the centre explains the site's stratigraphy and saves time wandering with questions.
- Take the short walk to the newly excavated terraces rather than only viewing from the fence-the accessible panels and explanatory boards at the enclosures reveal details that many passersby miss.
- If possible, choose a weekday rather than a weekend when local visitors and tour buses are most frequent; the site is remote and quieter outside peak local tourism periods.
Best Time to Visit Göbekli Tepe #
Best visited in spring or autumn when temperatures are mild and the open-air site is more comfortable.
