Goðafoss is a waterfall on the Skjálfandafljót river in northern Iceland, known for its semicircular cascade and the name meaning “Waterfall of the Gods.” It is one of Iceland’s better-known waterfalls and is noted for its accessible roadside viewpoints.
The falls drop approximately 12 metres and spread across roughly 30 metres of river, creating sweeping cascades and several small islands near the crest. There are viewing platforms on both banks and short paths that allow close access to the river edge for photography and observation.
Local tradition links the name to an event around the year 1000 when sagas say law-speaker Þorgeir Ljósvetningagoði disposed of pagan idols after Iceland’s conversion to Christianity, though that story is part of oral tradition rather than contemporary documentation.
Goðafoss sits in the Northeastern Region along the Ring Road and is easily reached from the nearby towns and services on the north coast; the nearest larger centre is Akureyri to the west along Route 1.
- Viewing point: The main viewpoint and car park are adjacent to the Ring Road (Route 1) and a pedestrian bridge gives the best panoramic views of the full fall line.
- Seasonal access: Accessible year-round but surfaces can be icy in winter; take care on paths and near the water's edge when frozen or snow-covered.
