Gnezdovo

Gnezdovo is an early medieval archaeological complex near Smolensk in western Russia, notable for a large cemetery and settlement remains dating mainly to the 9th-11th centuries.

The site includes extensive burial grounds and the remains of craft and trade activity - metalwork, weaponry, and imported goods have been recovered, indicating its role on riverine trade routes. Archaeologists have documented burial mounds (kurgans), flat graves and workshop zones across the complex.

Gnezdovo was used by Slavic and Norse (Varangian) communities during the period of early Rus’ formation and is linked to the trade corridor connecting the Baltic and Byzantine worlds. Excavations since the late 19th century have uncovered settlement layouts and burial complexes that illustrate cultural interaction in the region.

The site lies a few kilometres from the city of Smolensk on the banks of the Dnieper River in Smolensk Oblast, set on low-lying river terraces within the regional landscape.
