Glyder Fawr
Mountain Wales' mountain with dramatic cliffs and rocky ridges
A 1,001m peak in Snowdonia’s Glyderau, reached from the Ogwen Valley; walkers come for rocky summit routes, short scrambles and wide mountain views across Snowdonia’s ridges.
Glyder Fawr is a mountain in Snowdonia National Park in north-west Wales, reaching 1,001 meters above sea level and forming part of the Glyderau range.
The summit area is a rocky, tors-strewn plateau offering extensive views across Snowdonia and, on clear days, to the coast. The mountain is popular for hiking and scrambling, with well-trodden paths and exposed rock sections that are short but require care.
Geologically the summit and its rock formations were shaped by glaciation during the last Ice Age, leaving steep crags and glacially carved corries in the surrounding terrain. The ridge links closely with neighbouring peaks in the Glyderau, including Glyder Fach.
The mountain sits above the Ogwen Valley within Snowdonia; nearby villages include Bethesda and Capel Curig and the area is served by regional roads that provide access to common trailheads.
- Elevation: 1,001 meters above sea level.
- Common routes: Typical ascents start from Ogwen Cottage or Capel Curig; parts of the summit area require easy scrambling and sure-footedness.

- Use the Ogwen Valley / Cwm Idwal approach (popular start points at Ogwen Cottage/Idwal) to link Glyder Fawr with Glyder Fach for a fuller ridge walk; this route gives the most sustained views and features worth exploring.
- Don't stop at the obvious summit viewpoint: continue along the eastern plateau toward the rocky outcrops for dramatic vistas back toward Tryfan and Snowdon that many day visitors miss.
