Glenfinnan
Archaeological Site Scenic village famed for viaduct and Jacobite memorial
Highland village at the head of Loch Shiel, famed for the Glenfinnan Viaduct and Jacobite monument; visitors come for the steam train, hill walks, and loch views.
Glenfinnan is a small settlement at the head of Loch Shiel in Lochaber, Scotland, known for a prominent early-20th-century railway viaduct and a Jacobite memorial. The area is a noted rail and historical landmark with strong cultural recognition.
The site is best known for the 21-arched Glenfinnan Viaduct on the West Highland Line, completed in 1901, which carries passenger trains across a curved valley. Close to the viaduct is the Glenfinnan Monument, a stone commemorative tower erected in 1815; both structures are focal points for photographers and rail enthusiasts.
The viaduct was built for the West Highland railway and is still in regular use; the monument marks the place associated with the raising of the 1745 Jacobite standard. Over time the site has become a popular viewpoint and heritage attraction, and a small visitor centre beside the main road provides exhibits and visitor information.
Glenfinnan sits at the head of Loch Shiel in the western Highlands of Scotland, on the A830 road, roughly 30 km (around 19 miles) west of Fort William. The surrounding landscape is mountainous and coastal loch scenery typical of Lochaber.
- Best viewpoint: The best clifftop viewpoint is reached by a short walk north of the viaduct; it gives a clear view of all 21 arches and the trackbed where steam trains pass.
- Train crossings: The Jacobite Steam Train crosses the viaduct on a scheduled timetable in summer, making the crossing the most photographed moment of the day.
