Glacier Point
Cliff Scenic Yosemite viewpoint offering panoramic valley and waterfall views
Perched above Yosemite Valley, Glacier Point offers direct views of Half Dome, Yosemite Falls and the valley floor; visitors arrive by car or trail for photography, short hikes and sunset vistas.
Glacier Point is a prominent granite viewpoint in Yosemite National Park, California, at an elevation of about 7,214 feet (2,199 metres), overlooking Yosemite Valley and Half Dome.
The site offers expansive views across Yosemite Valley to Half Dome, Yosemite Falls and the park’s high country; viewpoints and short paved areas give photographers and day visitors panoramic sightlines. Hiking routes also connect the point with the valley and other high-elevation trails.
The name reflects the area’s glacially carved landscape; Glacier Point became a formal viewpoint as Yosemite developed for public visitation in the late 19th and early 20th centuries and has since been a principal scenic overlook in the park.
Glacier Point sits on the south wall of Yosemite Valley in the Sierra Nevada and is reached by a paved park road that is typically open seasonally, or by multiple hiking trails including routes that descend into the valley.
- Access and seasonality: Road access is seasonal; the Glacier Point Road is normally open in late spring through early fall depending on snow and road clearing.
- Best viewing times: Sunrise and sunset are prime viewing times for lighting on Half Dome and the valley; stargazing is popular on clear nights because of the elevation and open views.
