Glacier National Park is a protected area in British Columbia, Canada, located in the Selkirk Mountains and noted for its rugged alpine terrain and glacial features. The park protects mountain peaks, icefields and valleys carved by glaciers.

Popular activities within the park include hiking on mountain trails, viewing glacier tongues and alpine valleys, and photography of rugged scenery. Key on-site features include roadside viewpoints along the Trans-Canada Highway and short trail access to glacial viewpoints.

The landscape has been shaped by repeated glaciations and alpine erosion, leaving steep ridges, cirques and valley glaciers. The park exists to conserve these glacial landscapes and the associated alpine ecosystems.

Geographically the park lies in southeastern British Columbia within the Selkirk range, adjacent to the Trans-Canada Highway corridor and near mountain towns such as Revelstoke and Golden.

What to See#

• Rogers Pass: A transport corridor and mountain pass on the Trans-Canada Highway that provides the main vehicle access into the park and nearby alpine country.
• Illecillewaet Glacier: A named glacier within the park that exemplifies the park’s glacial features and is a destination for short glacier-side walks and views from nearby trails.

Glacier National Park (BC) is reached via the Trans‑Canada Highway (Highway 1) through Rogers Pass between Revelstoke and Golden. Drive along Highway 1 to the Rogers Pass / Illecillewaet area where the Rogers Pass visitor centre and parking provide access to trails and viewpoints within the park.

• Visit mid‑July through early September when high‑elevation trails and access roads around Rogers Pass are reliably open and glaciers are at their most visible.
• Enter via the Trans‑Canada Highway at Rogers Pass and stop at the Rogers Pass Discovery Centre for up‑to‑date trail and snow information before heading to Illecillewaet Glacier viewpoints.
• Start hikes very early to avoid day‑visitor congestion at popular trailheads and to increase your chances of calm weather and clearer glacier views.
• Check Parks Canada advisories ahead of time for road conditions, trail closures and wildlife alerts-Rogers Pass is an active avalanche area outside summer months.
