Gla
Archaeological Site Archaeological site of a Mycenaean-era fortified town
Bronze Age fortified site on a Greek plain known for massive walls and extensive storage buildings. Archaeological visitors and students study the ruins and the surrounding drained lakebed.
Gla is a major Mycenaean fortified settlement on the plain of Boeotia in Central Greece, notable for its large enclosure and role in the Late Bronze Age. Archaeologists identify it as one of the largest Mycenaean citadels on the Greek mainland and as a centre linked to the management of the surrounding agricultural plain.
The visible remains include substantial fortification walls and traces of internal buildings and storage areas, reflecting its function as a fortified administrative and storage centre. The site’s scale and layout indicate organised production and storage rather than a single palatial residence.
Gla was occupied during the Late Bronze Age, roughly the 13th to 12th centuries BCE, and its fortunes are tied to the management of the nearby Kopais basin, which was a major agricultural area in antiquity. The site was eventually abandoned in the following centuries as regional political and environmental conditions changed.
The archaeological site lies on the plain of Boeotia near the modern area of Orchomenos and the former Kopais lake basin, in Central Greece. It is reached from nearby regional towns and forms part of a landscape that was intensively farmed in antiquity.
- Mycenaean period association: Dating to the Late Bronze Age, the site is associated with the Mycenaean period and with the drained Kopais basin that supported regional agriculture and storage systems.
What to See #
- Fortified citadel: Large enclosing fortification walls and the remains of internal structures belong to a major Mycenaean citadel established during the Late Bronze Age.
- Central enclosure and deposits: Scattered domestic and storage remains within the site point to its role as a major administrative and storage centre in the Mycenaean period.
