Girsu
Archaeological Site Ancient Sumerian city-ruin, significant for early urban archaeology
An ancient Mesopotamian city‑site in southern Iraq (Dhi Qar Governorate), identified with Tell Telloh; archaeologists and history visitors come to study Sumerian ruins, buried temples and cuneiform-era remains.
Girsu is the modern name for an ancient Sumerian city in southern Mesopotamia, located in what is now Dhi Qar Governorate, Iraq. It was an important urban and religious center in the ancient state of Lagash and is known from archaeological remains and cuneiform records.
Excavations at the site have uncovered temples, administrative buildings and inscribed artifacts that document its role in Sumerian politics and religion. Finds from Girsu include statues and dedicatory inscriptions associated with rulers and temple cults.
The city was prominent in the third and late third millennia BCE, serving as a religious and administrative center under rulers of Lagash and later within imperial structures such as the Ur III state. Its status and functions changed with shifting regional powers over centuries.
Girsu corresponds to the tell now called Telloh or Tell Tello, located in southern Iraq’s alluvial plain and accessible from regional centers in Dhi Qar Governorate.
- Archaeological significance: Archaeological excavations have recovered artifacts and inscriptions that identify the site with the ancient Sumerian city often recorded in cuneiform texts.
Tips for Visiting Girsu #
- Girsu (Tell al‑Muqayyar) is an active archaeological locality in Dhi Qar; independent visits are uncommon-plan through Iraq's State Board of Antiquities or an accredited local tour operator to obtain necessary permissions and a security‑cleared guide.
- Use Nasiriyah as your logistical base when arranging a visit; most practical access, lodging and archaeological coordination for southern Mesopotamian sites is organized from there, not directly at the tell.
- Do not expect visitor infrastructure on the mound itself - archaeological remains are exposed and fragile, so follow your guide's directions and avoid unauthorised climbing or surface collection.
Best Time to Visit Girsu #
Aim for spring or autumn to avoid the intense summer heat common in southern Iraq and to make outdoor exploration more comfortable.
