Gigha
Island Small Hebridean island with sandy beaches and crofts
An island off Scotland’s west coast reachable by ferry from the mainland; visitors come for sandy bays like Machir Bay, coastal walks, birdwatching, local seafood and a small island community.
Gigha is a small inhabited island off the west coast of the Kintyre peninsula in Argyll and Bute, Scotland. It is a low-lying, agriculturally used island with a small scattered population and a mild, maritime climate.
Key local features include the main settlement area of Ardminish where ferry services arrive, and the landscaped Achamore Garden, noted for sheltered plantings and subtropical species. The island has beaches, coastal scenery and a network of minor roads linking settlements.
The island community completed a community ownership purchase in the early 2000s, which has shaped local development and conservation priorities. Gigha is served by regular ferry links to the mainland and has local accommodation and simple services for visitors.
Gigha lies off the southwest coast of Scotland, close to the Kintyre peninsula in Argyll and Bute, and is reachable by ferry from mainland departure points on Kintyre.
- Community Ownership: Owned and managed by the local community following a successful community buyout in the early 2000s.
- Ferry Access: Regular vehicle and passenger ferry links connect the island to the Kintyre peninsula on the Scottish mainland.
What to See #
- Ardminish: The main settlement on the island where the ferry terminal and community services are concentrated; it is the island's administrative centre.
- Achamore Garden: A well-known, cultivated garden noted for exotic and sheltered plantings that benefit from the island's mild maritime climate.
How to Get to Gigha #
The Isle of Gigha (Ardminish is the island’s main pier and village) is served by a vehicle ferry from the Kintyre peninsula. The ferry sails between Tayinloan on the mainland and Ardminish on Gigha and is the usual public-access route onto the island (car and foot passengers accepted); check the Caledonian MacBrayne (CalMac) or local ferry schedule for sailings and timings on the day you travel.
On arrival at Ardminish you are on the island and most sites are reached on foot or by the island’s minor roads.
Tips for Visiting Gigha #
- Check the ferry timetable and book vehicle/passenger space in advance during summer - ferries land at Ardminish, the island's main pier, and sailings are limited.
- Make Achamore Gardens a priority visit - the island's famous subtropical gardens are most impressive late spring to early summer when rhododendrons and other specimens are in bloom.
- Use Ardminish as your base for walks and short drives around the island's bays and beaches; services are limited, so plan onward travel and accommodation bookings ahead of time.
