Giewont
Mountain Prominent Tatra mountain massif and Christian summit cross
Rocky massif above Zakopane in the Polish Tatras, capped by a prominent steel cross; attracts hikers, pilgrims, and photographers for mountain trails and panoramas.
Giewont is a distinctive limestone massif in the Tatra Mountains near the town of Zakopane in southern Poland, notable for its profile that many describe as a reclining knight. The highest point, Wielki Giewont, reaches 1,894 metres above sea level.
The mountain is a popular hiking and pilgrimage destination with marked trails leading from Zakopane and surrounding valleys; the summit area is marked by a prominent metal cross. The exposed ridges and steep sections require care in poor weather and are known to attract many day hikers in summer.
Historically the site has had cultural significance for the local population and has been a focus of recreational mountaineering since the 19th century; the cross and summit routes are longstanding features of that tradition.
Giewont lies within the Polish Tatra range, a short distance southwest of the town of Zakopane and within the Tatra National Park landscape.
