Gibraltar Botanic Gardens
Park Botanical gardens on Gibraltar showcasing Mediterranean plants
Gibraltar Botanic Gardens (La Alameda) provide cultivated plant collections, shaded walks and birdwatching near the city center, used by residents and visitors seeking green space.
The Gibraltar Botanic Gardens (commonly called the Alameda) is a public botanical garden on the Rock of Gibraltar, established in 1816. It is one of Gibraltar’s oldest formal green spaces and was laid out in the early 19th century.
The gardens contain collections of Mediterranean and subtropical plants, with notable cactus and succulent plantings and shaded walkways for short strolls. There are formal beds, specimen trees, and small display areas that showcase plant diversity suited to Gibraltar’s climate.
The site was created under the governorship of Sir George Don and has been developed and replanted over the 19th and 20th centuries for public use and scientific interest. Management and plantings have changed over time but the area has remained a municipal green space since its founding.
The gardens sit within the urban area of Gibraltar, close to the center of the territory and the residential and commercial districts near the western side of the Rock. They are easily accessible from the central part of Gibraltar.
