Giants Stadium was a major American football stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, that opened in 1976 and was demolished in 2010. It was part of the Meadowlands Sports Complex and is remembered as the long-time home of the NFL’s New York Giants.

At its peak the venue seated around 80,000 spectators and hosted hundreds of professional football games, large concerts and major sporting events over its lifetime. The stadium had extensive parking and transport infrastructure to serve high-attendance events and sat alongside other Meadowlands facilities.

The stadium was built and operated within the Meadowlands complex by regional authorities and served as a primary sports venue for the New York metropolitan area for more than three decades. It closed at the end of the 2009 NFL season and was subsequently dismantled to make way for the newer stadium on the same site.

Located in East Rutherford, the site lies in the Meadowlands just across the Hudson River from New York City and was directly served by regional highways and rail links into the metropolitan area.

  • Current site: The original stadium structure was demolished and the site is now occupied by MetLife Stadium, which replaced it on the Meadowlands complex.

How to Get to Giants Stadium #

The stadium at the Meadowlands (East Rutherford) is best reached by car via the New Jersey Turnpike-follow signs for the Meadowlands and stadium parking (turnpike exits serving the Meadowlands area). On major event days public transit is available: take NJ Transit to Secaucus Junction and transfer to the Meadowlands Rail service or event shuttles that run to the Meadowlands station; from the station it’s a short walk to the complex.

Tips for Visiting Giants Stadium #

  • Note that the original Giants Stadium was demolished in 2010; check that your event is at MetLife Stadium in the Meadowlands complex (the current venue) before planning travel.
  • Use public transit on event days-NJ Transit to Secaucus Junction with Meadowlands Rail or special event buses-because road congestion and parking can be severe for major games or concerts.
  • If driving, pre-purchase a parking pass and arrive well before kickoff or show time to clear security and avoid last‑minute lot closures and heavy exit traffic.
